I do not know if a plot does exist in this novel. Because of my doubt, I am going to venture to say there is no plot. As we have already talked about in class, Sterne writes in a stream of consciousness style, which does not automatically classify a piece as void of plot, but it certainly does help the argument. Sterne is simply recording his thoughts and encounters regarding his travels as they come to mind. There is a purpose to his writing and he does everything with intentionality. He chooses what stories to narrate on paper, but it doesn't seem like he does it with an end goal in mind. Even though there is purpose in his writing, there is no plot.
I completely agree with Lauren in that there is no plot to this story. Not only that, but there does not even seem to be a plot within the different sub-chapters of the text as well. The character of Yorick is constantly shifting from one thought to another—making it extremely difficult to pin-point any story arc. This idea of having no plot can be further supported by Penguin Classics. As they state, “Sterne's Sentimental Journey is a novel without a plot and a journey without a destination.” It is for such reason that I believe no plot to exist in this story.
