The individual prays for a longer life, going so far as to assume that his life is indeed worth living for a longer time, regardless of circumstance. In fact, life is bad, and living it longer only makes it worse. Joys brought on by novel phenomena cease to exist, old pleasures dissipate and eventually disappear.
